Volkswagen electrical recalls: ID.4 battery fires and sudden power loss

This group is dominated by the ID.4 and by fire. Three campaigns cover high-voltage batteries — misaligned cell electrodes in 2023-2024 cars and an overheating battery in 2023-2025 — plus a 2023 rear-wheel-drive ID.4 recall for a 12-volt charging cable that can rub the steering column shaft and short. Three of those carry park-outside instructions. Loss of drive power is the other recurring thread: bad soldering inside 2021 ID.4 battery packs, battery-management software faults, a leaking electric motor sealing ring, and a failing on-board charger on 2024-2025 ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron. Gas models appear too — 2021 Atlas fuse-box relays, 2019-2020 Golf and Jetta ignition switches, and 2025 Jetta transmission ground wiring.
Warning signs to watch for
- Horn sounding or the starter cranking on its own (2021 Atlas)
- Sudden loss of drive power or a stall while driving
- Instrument panel blank, gauges or warning lights missing
- No visual brake system failure warning on a 2019 Beetle
- The key can be removed when the car is not fully in Park
Is it safe to keep driving?
Nothing here is a do-not-drive recall, but three carry park-outside instructions. Owners of 2023 rear-wheel-drive ID.4s with the chafing 12-volt cable should park outside and away from structures. For the 2023-2024 ID.4 battery module recalls, Volkswagen says park outside immediately after charging, do not leave the car charging indoors overnight, avoid Level 3 DC chargers, and limit charging. On the 2021 Atlas relay recall, if the horn sounds by itself or the starter keeps cranking, stop using the vehicle and call the dealer immediately.
What the free repair involves
It varies widely. Dealers update software on the high-voltage battery, pulse inverter, instrument panel and instrument cluster; replace battery cell modules, the on-board charger, the ignition switch, or the electric motor; inspect and replace fuse-box relays, the 12-volt charging cable, and the transmission ground wire; and install an additional switch and circuit board for the key-removal recall. Every one of these repairs is free of charge.

Common questions
Can I still charge my ID.4 at home?
For the 2023-2024 battery module recalls, Volkswagen says park outside immediately after charging and do not leave the vehicle charging indoors overnight. It also advises against Level 3 DC chargers and recommends limiting charging until the modules are replaced.
Why do I keep getting ID.4 battery letters?
They are separate campaigns: misaligned cell electrodes in 2023-2024 battery modules, a high-voltage battery that can overheat on 2023-2025 cars, incorrect soldering inside 2021 packs, and a 12-volt charging cable that can short. Each has its own remedy.
My Atlas horn went off by itself. Should I worry?
Yes. Damaged relays in the 2021 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport engine compartment fuse box can inadvertently activate the horn or engine starter and create a fire risk. Stop using the vehicle and contact your dealer immediately for the free inspection.
