Ford does not tell owners to stop driving, but the truck moving in an unexpected direction can cause a crash or injure someone nearby, so shift slowly and pause in each gear until the free software update is done.

What's wrong, in plain English

On some 2018 F-150s, moving the shift lever quickly from Park to Drive can confuse the truck. The gear display on the dashboard can go blank, and for a moment the truck may actually be in a different gear than you chose, such as Reverse or Neutral instead of Drive. If that happens the truck could move the opposite way from what you expect, which is dangerous in a driveway, a parking spot, or a garage. The dealer updates the truck's powertrain computer software.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to check whether your F-150 is covered by campaign 26V375000.
2. Contact your Ford dealer, or customer service at 1-866-436-7332, and reference recall 26S42 to schedule the update.
3. Before driving off, confirm the dashboard shows the gear you selected; the reprogramming is free, including on trucks already serviced under the earlier recall.

Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018 F-150 vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 17V669. Quickly moving the shift lever from Park to Drive may cause a loss of gear indication on the instrument cluster display and a momentary selection of an unintended gear, such as Reverse or Neutral.
Safety risk: Unintended gear selection may cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction, increasing the risk of crash or injury.
Remedy: Dealers will update the powertrain control module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 9, 2026. Owners may contact customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S42. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6, 2026.
