Buying a used 2020 BMW X6? Check these 10 recalls first

10 NHTSA recalls · 9 owner complaints on file

Two critical recalls cover a starter motor that can overheat and cause a fire. Others address a front suspension weld that may break, brake unit failure, and a roof spoiler that can come loose and detach — the spoiler covered by two separate campaigns. Lesser items include backup camera failure, a sunroof that closes without the key present, and headlights that can shine blue. Just 9 unverified owner complaints, mostly electrical, with no crashes, fires or injuries reported.

Before you buy

  1. Get the 17-character VIN from the seller and run it at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It shows which recalls are still unrepaired on that exact car.
  2. Verify both starter motor fire recalls were completed, and ask whether the car has had hard-starting or burning smells.
  3. Ask about the suspension weld and brake unit recalls, and inspect the roof spoiler mounting for looseness.
  4. Cycle the sunroof, backup camera and headlights, checking for a blue tint or camera dropout.
  5. Open recalls are repaired free at any BMW dealer, whoever owns the car — an open recall is a to-do item, not a bill.
