Before you buy

1. Get the 17-character VIN from the seller and run it at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It shows which recalls are still unrepaired on that exact car.
2. Confirm both airbag recalls were completed and that no airbag warning light stays lit
3. Ask for records of coolant loss, overheating, or engine work, and check the coolant level yourself
4. Listen for clunks over bumps and have the front lower control arms inspected on a lift
5. Open recalls are repaired free at any Toyota dealer, whoever owns the car — an open recall is a to-do item, not a bill.
