Crash sensors mounted in the pillar beside the front doors may have been put together incorrectly on certain Elantra N, Elantra, Tucson, Tucson Hybrid and Tucson Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. A sensor that was not assembled right can be slow to tell the airbags to inflate in a crash. Airbags that go off later than they should may not protect the people inside as well. Dealers will inspect the sensors and replace them if necessary.
A circuit board inside the backup camera on these Hyundai vehicles can be damaged, and when that happens the camera picture may not appear on the screen as you back up. You could be looking at a blank display instead of the area behind the car. Federal rules require a working rear view, so these vehicles fall short of the standard. The fix is a brand-new rearview camera, installed by the dealer at no cost to you.
The pump that sends gasoline to the engine can fail. If that happens, the engine loses power and the vehicle may slow down or stall while you are driving, possibly in traffic or at highway speed. Dealers will update the engine computer software and, if an inspection shows it is needed, replace the fuel pump assembly. Both repairs are free. Hyundai began mailing owner letters September 9, 2024, with some earlier warning letters sent September 3, 2024.
Certain Hyundai Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster N, Santa Cruz, Elantra N and Kona N vehicles have a problem with the transmission's oil pump. Normally, if the pump fails, the car drops into a backup mode that still lets you limp along. On these vehicles that backup mode may not work properly, and the car can lose drive power completely — meaning it stops pulling and you can no longer accelerate. Dealers will inspect and, if needed, replace the transmission and update its software free of charge.
The emblem on the cover of the driver's front airbag may not have been welded on properly at the factory. If the airbag goes off in a crash, that badge can break away and fly off with it. The airbag itself still does its job, but the loose emblem could strike someone in the car. To fix it, dealers are replacing the entire driver's front airbag rather than just the cover.
