Why do Hyundai Santa Fe and Sonata fuel systems leak?
Across these five Hyundai recalls, one theme dominates: gasoline escaping where it should not. Two separate campaigns cover the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, where the pipe joining the high-pressure fuel pump to the fuel rail was not tightened properly — first the 2021 Santa Fe alone, then 2021-2022 Santa Fe and Sonata together. A third covers the 2022 Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid, whose fuel tank may have been improperly molded. A fourth adds 2020-2023 Sonata, where a damaged check valve lets the tank expand into hot exhaust parts and melt. The fifth is different: fuel pump failure causing loss of drive power on Veloster N, Elantra N, Kona N and Genesis G70. Santa Fe and Sonata appear most often.
Warning signs to watch for
- A gasoline smell in or around the vehicle
- Visible fuel or a wet spot under the front of the car near the engine, where the fuel pipe connects
- On 2020-2023 Sonata, fuel odor from the rear of the car as the tank contacts hot exhaust components
- Loss of drive power while driving, on the Veloster N, Elantra N, Kona N and Genesis G70 fuel pump recall
- The notices describe no dashboard warning light for the leak recalls — a fuel smell may be your only clue
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these five recalls carries a stop-driving order, and none tells owners to park outside. Hyundai still treats the fuel pipe, fuel tank and check valve recalls as fire risks to handle right away: if you smell gasoline, stop driving and have the vehicle inspected. The 2021 Santa Fe fuel pipe recall is already complete — Hyundai reports all affected vehicles were repaired. On the fuel pump recall, driving until repair is acceptable, but a pump failure can cut engine power, so schedule it promptly.
What the free repair involves
Dealers inspect and tighten or replace the fuel pipe connection; inspect and replace an improperly molded plug-in hybrid fuel tank; replace the check valve, inspect the Sonata tank and replace it if damaged, and update the engine control unit software. On the fuel pump recall, dealers update engine control module software and replace the pump assembly as necessary. Every repair is free of charge.

Yes. On 2020-2023 Sonata, a damaged check valve can let air enter the tank, causing it to expand until it contacts hot exhaust components and melts. Dealers replace the check valve and the tank itself if it is damaged.
