Hyundai power train recalls: oil pump fires and sudden power loss

Six recalls, two recurring failures. The first is the electric oil pump controller for Idle Stop & Go: damaged electrical components can overheat on 2023-2024 Palisade and Tucson, 2023 Sonata, Elantra and Kona, while an insufficient seal lets moisture short the circuit board on the 2025 Palisade. Both are fire risks that call for parking outside. The second is sudden loss of drive power — hitting 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster N, Santa Cruz, Elantra N and Kona N through an impaired transmission fail-safe mode, and the 2023 IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and Genesis GV60 through an improperly heat-treated rear driveshaft. A 2024 IONIQ 6 differential and a 2024 Santa Fe roll-away complete the group.
Warning signs to watch for
- Sudden or complete loss of drive power while driving
- The vehicle rolling away after being shifted into PARK, on the 2024 Santa Fe
- Loss of acceleration on IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 or GV60 if the rear inner driveshaft breaks under load
- The differential locking up on the 2024 IONIQ 6 if the gear drive unit bolts are loose
- The oil pump controller recalls describe no advance warning — a fire can start even while the vehicle is parked
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group carries a stop-driving order. Two do change where you park: the electric oil pump controller recalls on 2023-2024 Palisade and Tucson, 2023 Sonata, Elantra and Kona, and on the 2025 Palisade, tell owners to park outside and away from structures until repaired, because a fire can start while parked. The power loss recalls on Santa Fe, Sonata, Santa Cruz, the N models and the EVs allow continued driving, but treat them as urgent. On the 2024 Santa Fe, always set the parking brake.
What the free repair involves
Dealers inspect and replace the electric oil pump controller on the fire-risk recalls, inspect and replace the transmission and update transmission control unit software on the 2021-2022 power loss recall, replace the rear inner driveshaft on IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and GV60, and replace the gear drive unit on the 2024 IONIQ 6. The Santa Fe roll-away fix comes as an over-the-air update plus dealer inspection. All free.

Common questions
Which of these recalls require me to park outside?
Two: the electric oil pump controller recall covering 2023-2024 Palisade and Tucson, 2023 Sonata, Elantra and Kona, and the separate 2025 Palisade controller recall. Both can cause a fire, so park away from structures until the controller is inspected or replaced.
Can my Hyundai really roll away while it is in Park?
On certain 2024 Santa Fe vehicles, a transmission control unit software error may allow the vehicle to roll away in PARK. Hyundai advises using the emergency parking brake after parking until the software update has been applied.
Do I have to visit a dealer for the Santa Fe roll-away fix?
Hyundai is releasing an over-the-air transmission control unit update for that recall, and dealers will also inspect vehicles as needed. Every other recall in this group requires a dealer visit, since parts are inspected or replaced.
