GMC Terrain Airbags May Not Work After Restart

NHTSA campaign 18V340000 · Reported 2018-05-24 · General Motors LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

This is serious because your airbags may not deploy in a crash, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, so you can keep driving while you schedule the free software update.

What's wrong, in plain English

The computer that decides when your airbags should go off may not shut down properly when you turn the Terrain off. If that happens, it can stay switched off the next time you start the vehicle. A unit that is not working cannot sense a crash or fire the airbags, so the airbags might not come out when you need them. The dealer fixes this by loading updated software into the unit, which takes no parts and costs nothing.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Terrain is included. 2. Call your GMC dealer or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 and give them recall number 18179. 3. Take the vehicle in for the software update — it is free.

AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE
Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018 GMC Terrain vehicles. The sensing diagnostic module (SDM) that senses a crash and deploys the necessary air bags may not power down correctly when the vehicle is shut off, causing it to be inoperative when the vehicle is restarted.
Safety risk
If the SDM becomes inoperative, it will not detect a crash or command the necessary air bag deployment, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the SDM with updated software, free of charge. The recall began June 29, 2018. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18179.

Verify your specific vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov. Recall repairs are free of charge by law.
