Serious — weakened brakes or a bolt jamming a wheel can cause a crash, and although the notice does not tell owners to park the truck, this repair should not be put off.

What's wrong, in plain English

The bolts that hold the brake calipers — the parts that squeeze the brake pads against the wheels — may have skipped a hardening step at the factory. A weak bolt can snap when you press the brake pedal hard. If that happens, the truck may not stop as well as it should, and a broken bolt can also get caught in the spinning wheel. Dealers replace the front and rear caliper bolts at no cost.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your truck is affected.
2. Call your Chevrolet dealer (1-800-222-1020) or GMC dealer (1-866-522-9559) and ask for recall N202294420 — the bolt replacement is free.
3. If you hear grinding or clunking from a wheel or the brakes feel weak, stop driving and have the truck towed in.

Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The bolts used to attach the front and/or rear brake calipers may have not been heat treated and may break under load.
Safety risk: Broken caliper bolts can reduce brake performance or interfere with wheel rotation and increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake caliper bolts, free of charge. The recall began March 23, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-866-522-9559. GM's number for this recall is N202294420.
