GMC brake recalls: why braking gets weaker or warning lights fail
⚠ 1 carries a park-outside (fire risk) advisory.
GMC's hydraulic brake recalls split between software and hardware. Software dominates: Electronic Brake Control Module reprogramming for vacuum pump output that drops over time on 2014-2018 Sierra 1500 and 2015-2018 Yukon, for a wheel-speed sensor fault that can pull 5.3-liter four-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs to one side, and for 2019 Sierra 1500 losing ABS, stability control or electronic brake assist. A 2023 Sierra 1500 and Yukon update, available over the air, restores a missing brake fluid warning light. The hardware side: 2020 Sierra 1500 caliper bolts that were not heat treated, 2021-2022 Sierra HD brake modulator bolts that can let water in, Savana Cutaway brake lines rubbing body mounts, and 2018-2019 Terrain rear caliper pistons needing a bleed.
Warning signs to watch for
- A brake pedal that gets harder to press over time, or longer stopping distances
- The vehicle pulling to one side while you are driving
- ABS, traction control or stability control warning lights coming on
- Reduced braking performance while towing a trailer
- Sometimes no warning at all — the 2019 software error can disable ABS and stability control without any warning light, and the 2023 recall is about a brake fluid light that fails to appear
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall here tells you to stop driving, but one adds a parking restriction: owners of 2021-2022 Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks whose brake control module was replaced during assembly are advised to park outside and away from other structures until the modulator valve is replaced, because water intrusion can cause a fire. The rest you may keep driving while you wait, leaving extra following distance — stopping distances can lengthen with vacuum pump wear or weak rear calipers. Treat the Savana Cutaway brake line recall as urgent, since a brake line can fail with little warning.
What the free repair involves
Software recalls are handled by reprogramming or recalibrating the Electronic Brake Control Module at the dealer; the 2023 brake fluid warning light recall can instead be delivered as an over-the-air update. Hardware recalls mean replacing the brake pressure modulator valve assembly, replacing the caliper bolts, inspecting and replacing the brake line as necessary, or bleeding the brake system. Every remedy is free of charge.

Common questions
Why does GM want the HD trucks parked outside?
On 2021-2022 Sierra 2500 and 3500, loose brake pressure modulator valve bolts can let water into the unit, which can short out and start a fire. Until the assembly is replaced, park outside and away from other structures, free of charge.
Can my brake recall be fixed over the air?
Only one in this group. The 2023 Sierra 1500 and Yukon recall for the missing brake fluid warning light updates the eBCM software either over the air or at a dealer. Every other brake recall here needs a dealer visit.
No warning light has come on — does that mean I am fine?
Not necessarily. The 2019 Sierra 1500 software error can disable ABS and electronic stability control without lighting a warning, and the 2023 recall exists because the brake fluid warning light may not display at all. Check your VIN rather than the dash.
A recall applies only to specific vehicles. Check your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
