Chevrolet brake recalls: fire risk, software faults and failing calipers

Chevrolet's hydraulic brake recalls fall into three groups. Electronic brake control module software is the most repeated: reprogramming for fading vacuum assist on 2014-2018 Silverado and 2015-2018 Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon, a wheel-speed-sensor fault that pulls 5.3-liter four-wheel-drive models to one side, ABS and stability control quietly disabling on 2019 Silverado 1500, Sierra and CT6, and a missing brake fluid warning light on 2023-2024 trucks and SUVs. Second, brake fluid leaking into electrical parts and causing fires — 2021-2022 Silverado 2500 and 3500 and the 2019-2024 Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD through 6500HD. Third, hardware: untreated caliper bolts on 2020 Silverado 1500, a cracked Bolt EV caliper, dragging 2020 Equinox rear calipers and chafing Express Cutaway brake lines.
Warning signs to watch for
- Longer stopping distances as vacuum brake assist gradually weakens
- The vehicle pulling to one side while driving after a wheel-speed sensor fails
- ABS, traction control or stability control dropping out — on 2019 models this can happen with no warning light
- No brake fluid warning light appearing even when brake fluid is low (2023-2024 trucks and SUVs)
- Rear brakes dragging or overheating on the 2020 Equinox, or braking power cutting out after a hard stop on the Bolt EV
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall here orders owners to stop driving, but three tell you where to park. The 2021-2022 Silverado 2500 and 3500 with a replaced brake module, the 2019-2023 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD, and the 2019-2024 Silverado Medium Duty should be parked outside and away from structures until repaired, because leaking brake fluid can short-circuit and start a fire. The rest remain drivable. Leave extra following distance where assist or ABS may fade, take extra care towing a 2021 Tahoe or Yukon, and treat the Express Cutaway brake line as urgent.
What the free repair involves
Software recalls reprogram or recalibrate the electronic brake control module, and the 2023-2024 brake fluid warning light recall can be done over the air or at a dealer. Hardware recalls replace the brake pressure modulator valve, master cylinder pressure sensor or its wire harness, caliper bolts, cracked or dragging calipers and damaged brake lines. One medium-duty repair adds protective tape to a harness fitted under an earlier recall. All free.

Common questions
Why does a brake recall tell me to park outside?
Because brake fluid can leak into a pressure switch or modulator valve and short-circuit, starting a fire whether the truck is moving or parked. GM advises owners of the affected Silverado heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks to park outdoors away from structures until repaired.
Can any of these be fixed over the air?
Only one. The 2023-2024 recall for the missing brake fluid warning light updates the eBCM software over the air or at a dealer. Every other recall in this group — including the other software reprogramming campaigns — requires a dealer visit.
My brakes were already repaired under a recall. Could there be another?
Yes. 2019-2020 Silverado Medium Duty trucks remedied under recall 25V390 received a brake jumper wire harness assembled without protective tape. Dealers remove the harness, apply the tape and reinstall it free of charge; letters were planned for December 22, 2025.
