Very serious — a sudden loss of steering can happen with no warning and cause a crash, so have this checked immediately.
What's wrong, in plain English
The bolt that connects the steering shaft to the steering gear can work itself loose. That shaft is what carries your turning of the steering wheel down to the front wheels, so if the bolt loosens you can lose the ability to steer the vehicle. Audi dealers will inspect that bolt and replace it if necessary, at no cost to you. The recall began in March 2020, so the free repair has been available for a while.

- Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019 Audi Q8 and 2017-2019 Audi Q7 vehicles. The bolt connecting the steering shaft to the steering gear may loosen, possibly resulting in a loss of steering control.
