Honda Odyssey backup camera may show blurry or blank image
medium How serious is it? About this label
Moderate — a bad camera view makes backing up riskier, especially around people or obstacles, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.
What's wrong, in plain English
The backup camera on these minivans can fail. Water can seep in through the holes where the camera is mounted and reach the lens, so the picture on your dashboard screen comes out blurry, warped, or blank. The camera can also go dark if you use the top-down view or switch out of it in bright light. Either way you lose the view behind you when reversing, which is exactly when you need it. Dealers replace the camera free.
What you should do
2. Schedule the free camera replacement at a Honda dealer, referring to recall W83.
3. Until it is fixed, turn and look behind you when reversing instead of relying on the screen; call Honda at 1-888-234-2138 with questions.

- Summary
- American Honda Motor Co. (Honda) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Odyssey vehicles. Water may get into the rearview camera mounting holes and enter the camera lens and cause a distorted image, or no image at all. Additionally, if the rearview camera view mode is set to top-down view, or switched from that view to another mode in a bright environment, the image may not display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
- Safety risk
- A distorted or inoperative rearview camera display can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy
- Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is W83.
