Water can get inside the backup camera on these minivans. When that happens, the picture may not come up on the dashboard screen after you shift into reverse. You lose the view directly behind the van, so it is easier to back into something, or someone, that the mirrors do not show. Federal rules require that picture to appear, which is why this is a recall. The dealer replaces the camera at no charge to you.
A sensor under the front passenger seat measures the weight of whoever is sitting there so the car knows how to use the airbags. That sensor can crack and short out. If it does, the airbags can go off in an unintended way during a crash, which can hurt the people inside. This recall covers a long list of Honda and Acura models and expands an earlier recall. Dealers will put in new seat weight sensors.
A programming mistake in the computer that controls the airbags can make the side airbags and the curtain airbags along the windows go off when they should not, with no crash happening. An airbag that fires unexpectedly can injure whoever is sitting next to it. These minivans were converted by Vantage Mobility so a wheelchair can ride inside. The wheelchair is held down by belt-style restraints with retractors that are supposed to lock, much like a seat belt locks. On these vans, the retractors may fail to lock, so the wheelchair is not really tied down. If it is not secured, the chair and the person in it can roll or tip while the van is moving, braking, or turning.
The steering gearbox on these vehicles may not have been tightened properly when it was put together. A gearbox that is not tight lets water get inside, and the water causes rust. Rusted gears can start to bind, which means the steering may feel stiff or may not respond the way it should while you are driving. Honda dealers will replace the entire electric power steering rack on affected vehicles, free of charge to the owner.
There is a sensor in the front passenger seat that senses the weight of whoever is sitting there. It tells the vehicle whether to turn the passenger airbag off — for example when the seat is empty or a small person is in it. On these vehicles the sensor can crack and short out, so the airbag may not switch off when it should. It could then go off in a crash when it was supposed to stay shut. Dealers replace the sensor free.
The fuel pump sits inside the gas tank and sends fuel to the engine. On these vehicles that pump can fail. When it does, the engine can stall while you are driving — losing power in traffic or on the highway raises the chance of a crash. A dealer will replace the entire fuel pump unit for free. This recall is an expansion of two earlier Honda fuel pump recalls covering additional vehicles.
A manufacturing mistake means a bearing inside the engine — part of what lets the engine's moving pieces spin smoothly — can wear down and seize up. That damages the engine, which may then run roughly or stall while you are driving. A stalled engine in traffic can lead to a crash, and the damage can also lead to a fire. Dealers will inspect the engine and repair it, or replace it entirely if that is what it needs.
When you shift into reverse, a camera is supposed to show what is behind you on the dashboard screen. In these vehicles, a connector on the cable that carries the camera picture can go bad, so the screen may show nothing at all. Without that view, it is easier to miss a child, a pet, or an object behind you while backing up. The dealer will replace the cable and add a cover that holds the connector straight.
The glass in both outside mirrors has a small heating pad glued behind it to clear fog and frost. On these vehicles the glue may not hold properly, so the mirror glass can come loose and fall off, including while you are driving. Without a side mirror you cannot see traffic beside and behind you, which makes changing lanes and merging much riskier. The dealer will replace both the left and right outside mirrors for free.
Because of a manufacturing problem, part of the front seat belt buckle can press against the release button. When that happens, the metal tongue will not click in and stay locked, so the belt may not fasten at all. A seat belt that is not latched cannot hold you in place in a crash. Honda dealers will replace the driver and front passenger buckle release buttons, or the whole buckle, free of charge. Letters were mailed April 18, 2023.
Some 2022 Honda Odyssey vans left the factory with Bridgestone tires that may have a tiny pinhole in the sidewall. The hole is too small to see, but it lets air seep out slowly, so a tire can go soft over days or weeks without any obvious warning. An underinflated tire does not grip or handle the way it should, which raises the chance of a crash. A dealer will check all four tires and replace any with a hole.
Certain 2022 Honda Odyssey minivans may have bent parts in the locking mechanism on the rails under the second-row window-side seats. Those locks are what hold a seat in position once you slide it forward or back. If the lock is bent, the seat may not click securely into place and can shift or slide while the vehicle is moving, even if it feels locked when you set it.
The pump that pushes gasoline out of the fuel tank toward the engine sits inside the tank, and on these Honda and Acura vehicles it can stop working. When it fails, the engine can stall, meaning it shuts off while you are driving, and that can happen at any speed. Your dealer will replace the whole fuel pump assembly at no cost to you. This recall is a larger version of an earlier Honda recall, 20V-314.
Braun is recalling certain 2018-2021 Honda Odyssey vans that Braun modified. The replacement fuel tank Braun installed can overfill, pushing gasoline into the charcoal canister, a small container that is meant to catch fuel vapor rather than liquid fuel. If enough gasoline collects in it, fuel can leak out of the van. Leaking gasoline near anything hot or sparking can start a fire. Dealers will inspect the van and replace parts if needed, free.
The backup camera on these minivans can fail. Water can seep in through the holes where the camera is mounted and reach the lens, so the picture on your dashboard screen comes out blurry, warped, or blank. The camera can also go dark if you use the top-down view or switch out of it in bright light. Either way you lose the view behind you when reversing, which is exactly when you need it. Dealers replace the camera free.
The cables that run from the outside handles to the latches on the power sliding doors can let water get in. In cold weather that water can freeze, and a frozen cable stops the front and rear sliding door latches from closing securely. A door that is not properly latched can slide open while the van is moving, which is a real danger with passengers or children riding in back. Dealers replace the outer handle cables free of charge.
A software error in the module that runs the dashboard can make the display go blank or leave out important information. You may lose the speedometer, the oil pressure warning, and the indicator showing which gear the car is in, and the backup camera picture may not appear. The information comes back the next time you start the car. A dealer reprograms the software to fix it.
Software in the vehicle's main computer network was programmed incorrectly, so the backup camera picture can be slow to appear or may not appear at all when you shift into reverse. Without that view you can miss a child, a pedestrian, or an object directly behind the vehicle. Honda will mail instructions so you can download and install the update yourself for free, or a dealer will do it for you at no charge.
The bundle of wires that feeds the power outlet by the third-row seat can get pinched between the body of the van and the rear trim panel. Over time the squeezed wires can be damaged and short out. A short that comes and goes can make the wire bundle get very hot, and Honda says that raises the chance of a fire. Dealers will inspect the wiring and replace it, or tape and reroute it if it looks undamaged.
Your vehicle's timing belt is a toothed rubber belt that keeps the engine's internal parts turning in step. On these vehicles, the teeth can break off the belt. If that happens, the engine can shut off while you are driving, and the belt failure can also damage other engine parts. Dealers will check the belt and replace it at no cost, and will also inspect the engine and replace anything that was damaged.
On these Odyssey minivans, a loose battery cable connection or a worn-down battery can make the transmission's computer restart on its own. When it restarts, it can shift the van into Park while it is still moving, which can damage the small rod that locks the parking gear. If that rod is damaged, the van may not truly hold in Park and can roll away after you walk off. Dealers tighten the battery connections, update the software, and check the parking rod, free.
These Odysseys were modified by another company to add a wheelchair ramp built into the floor. During that work, the wiring for the two rear wheel speed sensors may have been connected to the wrong wheels. The anti-lock brake system relies on those readings to keep the wheels from locking up during hard or slippery stops, so with them swapped the system may not work properly. A dealer inspects the wiring and corrects it if needed.
The power sliding side doors on certain 2018 and 2019 Honda Odyssey minivans have rear latches that can stick instead of catching properly on the door frame. A door that has not fully latched can come open while the van is moving. That could injure someone inside the van or someone standing nearby. Honda dealers will replace the rear latch assemblies on both the left and right sliding doors at no charge to you.
The pistons inside the rear brakes were not coated the way they should have been. That can let gas pockets form, and gas squeezes down when you press the brake pedal instead of pushing the brakes firmly against the wheel. The result is weaker braking than the vehicle is supposed to have, so it may take longer than normal to stop. These vehicles do not meet the federal braking standard. The fix is free.
The computer that controls the airbags and seat belt tighteners in these Honda Insight, Odyssey, and Ridgeline vehicles may have been built wrong. Because of that mistake, the airbags might not inflate in a crash, and the seat belts might not pull tight the way they should to hold you in your seat. You would have no warning ahead of time, and everything looks normal until a crash actually happens. People in the vehicle could be hurt more badly.
The metal buckle tongue on the seat belt for the middle seat in the third row may be the wrong part for the buckle it goes into. Because the two pieces don't match, the belt may not lock in place securely the way it should. Anyone riding in that seat could be poorly protected and more likely to be hurt in a crash. A Honda dealer will check that belt and replace it free if the wrong part was installed.
