Volvo VNR and other trucks: brake pedal may break off

NHTSA campaign 20V536000 · Reported 2020-09-02 · Volvo Trucks North America

high How serious is it? About this label

Losing the ability to brake is very dangerous and can lead to a crash; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but this should be inspected right away.

What's wrong, in plain English

The metal plate that holds the brake pedal in place is made of cast metal, and it can crack at one of the points where it bolts on. If that happens, the brake pedal can come loose from its mounting. A pedal that has come loose will not work, so pressing it would not slow or stop the truck. Volvo says these trucks do not meet the federal safety rule for air brake systems.
