Volvo VNR Electric battery coolant leak can cause fire

NHTSA campaign 23V280000 · Reported 2023-04-19 · Volvo Trucks North America

critical How serious is it? About this label

This is a fire risk and should be handled promptly, though the notice does not instruct owners to stop driving or to park the truck outside.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2020-2024 Volvo VNR Electric trucks, a coolant line inside the high-voltage battery pack may not be pushed all the way in and locked. If it is loose, coolant can leak out of the pack. That leak can cause an electrical short inside the battery, and a short in a large battery pack can lead to a fire. Volvo Trucks is working with the battery maker, Akasol, to inspect the batteries and replace them if needed.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm the truck is covered by recall 23V280000.
2. Contact your Volvo Trucks dealer, or Volvo Trucks customer service at 1-800-528-6586, and reference recall RVXX 2304.
3. Have the battery inspected and replaced if needed — the work is free.
