Volvo trucks may apply parking brakes without warning

NHTSA campaign 20V782000 · Reported 2020-12-15 · Volvo Trucks North America

critical How serious is it? About this label

This is serious: parking brakes that grab unexpectedly can cause you to lose control and crash, so get the truck inspected right away and use extra caution until it is done.

What's wrong, in plain English

The air lines that work the truck's brakes plug into a pass-through plate using small brass fittings. On these trucks, the gripping jaws inside some fittings may have been damaged during factory leak testing. A damaged fitting can let go of the pressurized air line entirely. If that happens on the parking brake line, the air pressure that holds the parking brakes off is lost, and the parking brakes clamp down on their own, possibly while you are driving.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your truck is covered. 2. Call a Volvo Trucks dealer to schedule the inspection, or reach Volvo Trucks customer service at 1-800-528-6586 (recall RVXX2006). 3. Have the dealer check the air brake line fitting; the inspection and any repair are free.

Summary
Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo Trucks) is recalling 2021 VNL, VNR, VAH, and VHD vehicles. The collets (internal jaws) for the brass fitting inserts used in the pneumatic pass-through plate may have been damaged during leak testing. As a result, the brass fitting may completely release the air brake line from the pass-through plate while under pressure. If this occurs on the park brake circuit, signal pressure that holds off the mechanical spring in the park brake chambers will be lost allowing the park brakes to apply.
Safety risk
If the park brakes apply unexpectedly, the driver may lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy
Volvo Trucks will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air brake line for proper engagement of the fitting in the pass-through plate, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 31, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Trucks customer service at 1-800-528-6586. Volvo Trucks' number for this recall is RVXX2006.

Verify your specific vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov. Recall repairs are free of charge by law.
