Serious: a sudden engine stall raises the risk of a crash, and although the notice does not tell owners to park the car, the inspection should not be put off.

What's wrong, in plain English

A small sealing pin was left out of the connector that plugs into your engine's main computer. Without it, water and dampness can seep in. Moisture on those electrical contacts can corrode them and confuse the computer that runs the engine. If the computer acts up, the engine can shut off unexpectedly while you are driving. Dealers will check the connector, add the missing pin, and look for corrosion, replacing the connector if it has already been damaged.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your A8 or S8 is covered.
2. Contact an Audi dealer, or Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 (recall 97EV), to schedule the inspection.
3. Let the dealer install the sealing pin and replace the connector if needed — all free of charge.

Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Audi A8 and 2020-2021 Audi S8 vehicles. A missing sealing pin may allow moisture to enter the engine control module connector, possibly causing a control module malfunction.
Safety risk: An engine control module malfunction may cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine control module connector for a missing sealing pin, and install it, if necessary. The connector will also be inspected for corrosion, and replaced as necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 12, 20121. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 97EV.
