Audi S8 backup camera may not show image

NHTSA campaign 21V825000 · Reported 2021-10-20 · Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

A rear-view camera that does not display an image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

A software glitch in certain Audi models, including the S8, can keep the backup camera picture from showing up on the screen when you first shift into reverse. Federal rules require that image to appear, so these vehicles do not meet the standard. Without the picture, you cannot see what is directly behind you, which makes backing into a person or object more likely. Dealers will reprogram the infotainment screen settings free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Audi is covered by recall 91CR.
2. Schedule the software update with your Audi dealer, or call Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834.
3. Have the infotainment update installed — it is free.
