Some Ram 1500 trucks built with the trailer reverse steering system have a software problem that can keep the backup camera picture from showing on the screen. When you shift into reverse you may see a blank screen instead of the view behind the truck, so you could miss a person, a child, or an object back there. Federal rules require that image to appear. The dealer reprograms the module's software free of charge.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your truck is affected. 2. Call your Ram dealer or FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403 (recall Y30) for the free software update, and ask about recall 21V-918, which replaced this one. 3. Until it is fixed, turn and check over your shoulder every time you reverse.

Component: BACK OVER PREVENTION:DISPLAY FUNCTION
Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with a trailer reverse steering module (TRSCM). The rearview camera image may not display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk: A rearview camera that does not display an image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy: Dealers will update the TRSCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 24, 2021. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA, US, LLC's number for this recall is Y30. This recall was superseded by recall number 21V-918.
