GMC Acadia airbags may not deploy in a crash

NHTSA campaign 21V702000 · Reported 2021-09-10 · General Motors, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Airbags that will not deploy are a serious injury risk in any crash; no owner letters are being mailed because both vehicles are still in dealer inventory and have not been sold.

What's wrong, in plain English

The computer that decides when to set off the airbags was left in a factory test mode and never switched on before the vehicle left the plant. With that computer not activated, the airbags will not inflate in a crash, so people inside would not get that protection. This means the vehicle does not meet the federal crash protection rules. Both affected vehicles are still on dealer lots and will be sent back to the assembly plant to have the computer turned on.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm whether your vehicle is one of the affected units. 2. If it is, contact your GMC dealer or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 about recall N212344261. 3. The vehicle goes back to the assembly plant for activation at no cost to you.
