Why does my Audi backup camera show a black screen?
All six of these Audi recalls are rear visibility failures under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, and five of the six come down to software rather than a broken camera. The pattern repeats: an error in the infotainment unit or the camera control unit leaves the reversing image blank, delayed or absent. It has touched nearly the whole lineup — the 2021 A8 and S8, a wide 2021 group from A4 and A5 through A6, A7 and e-tron, the 2024-2025 Q3 alongside the VW Tiguan, and a December 2025 campaign covering 2019-2026 vehicles. The Q6 e-tron is the exception: the 2025 Q6 and SQ6 carry two recalls, one for a delayed or deactivated image and one for a genuinely blurry camera.
Warning signs to watch for
- Black or blank screen where the reversing image should appear
- Image shows up late, after you have already started backing up
- No rear image the first time you reverse after starting the car
- On the 2025 Q6 and SQ6 e-tron, a blurry or unclear rear picture
- No warning light or message — the missing image is the only sign
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these six recalls restricts driving. No notice tells owners to stop driving or park outside, and nothing here affects steering, braking or the drivetrain. Audi rates them moderate because the hazard exists only while you reverse. Keep driving and keep the appointment, but back up as though the camera were not there: use your mirrors, turn and look over your shoulder, and go slowly in parking lots, driveways and anywhere a child or pedestrian could be behind you.
What the free repair involves
Five of the six are software fixes: dealers reprogram the infotainment unit or its parameters, or update the camera control unit software. The blurry image recall on the 2025 Q6 and SQ6 e-tron is hardware — dealers replace the rearview camera and inspect the surround view cameras, replacing them if necessary. These are dealer visits, not over-the-air updates, and every repair is free.

Common questions
Is a backup camera recall really worth a dealer visit?
Yes. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 requires that rear image, and Audi's notices say losing it raises the chance of backing into a person or object. The repair costs nothing, and on five of the six recalls it is only a software update.
Why is my Q6 e-tron listed in two camera recalls?
The 2025 Q6 and SQ6 e-tron have two separate defects announced the same day: one where the image is delayed or deactivated after shifting into reverse, fixed with software, and one where the camera shows a blurry image, fixed by replacing it.
My Audi is a 2019 — why is this coming up only now?
Audi's December 2025 campaign covers 2019-2026 vehicles, including the 2019 A6, A7, Q8 and e-tron, for a software error that can prevent the rearview image from displaying. Owner letters were mailed January 14, 2026, under Audi recall number 90TV.
