Kia Sorento turbo oil pipe can crack, risking fire

NHTSA campaign 22V202000 · Reported 2022-03-29 · Kia Motors America

critical How serious is it? About this label

This is a fire risk, so although the notice does not tell owners to park the vehicle, treat it as urgent and stop driving right away if you smell burning oil or see smoke.

What's wrong, in plain English

The pipe that carries oil to the turbocharger can crack and let engine oil leak into the engine bay. If that oil reaches hot engine or exhaust parts, it can catch fire. A leak may show up as an oil smell, smoke, or oil spots under the car. A Kia dealer will replace the turbocharger oil supply pipe free of charge, and Kia mailed owner letters on April 22, 2022. Have it done as soon as a service appointment is available.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Sorento is on the list.
2. Call your Kia dealer or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and ask for recall SC233.
3. Get the oil supply pipe replaced as soon as possible — the repair is free.
