Ram pickup tailgate may open while you drive

NHTSA campaign 22V904000 · Reported 2022-12-08 · Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

medium How serious is it? About this label

An unintended tailgate opening while driving may result in a loss of unsecured cargo, possibly creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

On these Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups, the catch that the tailgate latches onto may be out of position. As a result the tailgate may not lock shut properly and can swing open while you are driving. Anything in the bed that is not tied down can then slide or fall out onto the road behind you, where it becomes a hazard for other drivers. The dealer adjusts it free.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
2. Call your Ram dealer, or FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403 (recall ZB8), for the free tailgate inspection and adjustment.
3. Until then, strap down anything you carry in the bed and check that the tailgate is fully latched before each trip.
