There is no instruction to stop driving, but crash sensors that misread an impact can leave you less protected in a collision, and the fact that GM repurchases affected cars rather than fixing them shows this is treated seriously.

General Motors is recalling certain 2022-2023 Chevrolet Malibu cars. The front impact bar, a structural piece of the car's frame, may not have been welded properly to the frame rail behind it. The car's front crash sensors depend on that structure, so a bad weld could keep them from reading a collision correctly. GM is not repairing these cars: if a dealer finds the incomplete weld, GM will buy the vehicle back from you instead.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Malibu is affected.
2. Contact a Chevrolet dealer or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 to schedule the inspection, which costs you nothing.
3. If the bad weld is found, work with GM on the vehicle repurchase they are offering.

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. The front impact bar, a structural portion of the vehicle frame, may not be properly welded to the front frame rail.
Safety risk
An improperly welded front impact bar may result in the front crash sensors not performing correctly, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the right-hand and left-hand side of the vehicle's motor rail for an incomplete weld. If the condition is found, the vehicle will be repurchased by GM. Owner notification letters were mailed January 20, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.
