Chevrolet body and frame recalls: fires, hoods, doors and welds
Six Chevrolet recalls sit in this group, and the loudest pattern is the Bolt EV. GM recalled 2017-2023 Bolt EVs twice — December 2022 and again December 2023 — because a deployed seat belt pretensioner's exhaust can ignite carpet fibers near the B-pillar and start a fire after a crash; the second recall also sweeps in cars repaired incorrectly the first time. The rest are body and frame defects: a cracked right-hand frame rail on 2020 Traverse and Buick Enclave, hoods that can fly open on 2020 Silverado 2500 and 3500, an incomplete front impact bar weld on 2022-2023 Malibu that GM handles by buying the car back, and door strikers that fracture on 2024 Blazer, Blazer EV and Equinox.
Warning signs to watch for
- A door that opens unexpectedly while the vehicle is moving, or a striker that no longer holds the door shut (2024 Blazer, Blazer EV, Equinox)
- A hood that unlatches or lifts while driving, blocking your view (2020 Silverado 2500/3500)
- No warning signs at all for most of these — a cracked Traverse frame rail and an incomplete Malibu weld give nothing you can feel while driving
- Nothing noticeable on the Bolt EV either: the fire risk only appears after a crash that deploys a seat belt pretensioner
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these six recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside order. The two Bolt EV pretensioner recalls only matter in a crash, so driving while you wait is acceptable, but the repair should not be put off. The 2020 Silverado HD hood and the 2024 door strikers deserve the fastest appointment, because a hood opening at highway speed or a door opening while moving can cause a crash on any trip. The Traverse and Enclave frame rail and the Malibu weld cars drive normally; what is reduced is crash protection.
What the free repair involves
Repairs vary. Bolt EVs get metal foil installed at the carpet by the pretensioner exhaust, plus a pretensioner cover where needed, and the 2023 recall adds an inspection of both front pretensioners. Dealers replace the hood assembly on Silverado HDs and all four door strikers and bolts on the 2024 SUVs, and inspect the Traverse and Enclave frame rail. Malibus with an incomplete weld are repurchased by GM. Everything is free.

Common questions
My Bolt EV was already fixed under recall 22V-930 — why another letter?
The December 2023 recall includes Bolt EVs that were repaired incorrectly the first time. Dealers re-inspect both front seat belt pretensioners and install the metal foil at the carpet, plus a pretensioner cover on certain vehicles, at no charge.
Is GM really buying back Malibus instead of repairing them?
For the 2022-2023 Malibu recall, yes. Dealers inspect the right-hand and left-hand motor rail for an incomplete weld where the front impact bar attaches, and if the condition is found, GM repurchases the vehicle rather than repairing it.
Does the Bolt EV fire risk exist when the car is just parked?
The notices describe the fire only after a crash with seat belt pretensioner deployment, when the pretensioner exhaust can ignite carpet fibers near the B-pillar. GM does not tell Bolt EV owners to stop driving or to park outside.
