Chevrolet Malibu backup camera may show blank or distorted image

NHTSA campaign 26V212000 · Reported 2026-04-02 · General Motors, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

A rearview image that does not display correctly reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The backup camera on these cars may show a scrambled, warped picture, or no picture at all, when you shift into reverse. Without that view you cannot see a child, a pet, or a low obstacle sitting directly behind the car, because mirrors do not cover that area. The dealer will inspect the camera and replace it at no cost if it is faulty. Until then, turn around and look behind the car before you back up.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls — covered VINs have been searchable since April 2, 2026.
2. Call your Chevrolet dealer, or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (recall N262551720).
3. Have the rearview camera inspected and replaced if needed — the repair is free.
