Rivian R1T and R1S front passenger airbag may not deploy

NHTSA campaign 23V109000 · Reported 2023-02-22 · Rivian Automotive, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious — the front passenger airbag may not work as intended in a crash, though the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2022 Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles, a sensor in the front passenger seat belt can report the wrong setting. That wrong reading can make the vehicle hold back the front passenger airbag or set it off in the wrong way during a crash. Because of this, the vehicle does not meet the federal safety rule for crash protection. A dealer will check the front passenger seat belt parts and replace what is needed.

Summary
Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2022 R1T and R1S vehicles. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Safety risk
Failure of the air bag to deploy as intended increases the risk of injury to the front passenger during a crash.
