Rivian seat belt recalls: loose anchor bolts and airbag concerns
Fasteners are the through-line here. Three of these five Rivian recalls involve seat belt bolts that were not properly installed or tightened: front anchors inadequately attached to the B-pillar on 2022 R1T and R1S, D-ring bolts at the front seat belt anchorage assemblies on 2022-2025 R1T and R1S, and second-row retractor bolts on 2022-2025 R1T and 2022-2026 R1S. The 2022 model year is hit hardest, appearing in four of the five. The other two are different failures — a faulty automatic locking retractor sensor in the 2022 front passenger belt system that can cause airbag suppression or improper deployment, and a driver's belt pretensioner cable that may be damaged on 2022-2025 EDV vans.
Warning signs to watch for
- A front or second-row belt anchor point that feels loose or shifts when tugged
- In most of these recalls there is no outward warning — a bolt that was never tightened only reveals itself in a crash
- On the 2022 passenger belt recall, the airbag system may report the wrong occupant-restraint state, which you cannot confirm from the driver's seat
- Nothing in the notices describes a dashboard warning light or audible alert for these defects
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these five recalls tells owners to stop driving or park outside, and all of them allow the vehicle to stay in normal use while the free inspection is arranged. That said, these defects affect how well a belt protects you in a crash, so keep everyone belted and book the appointment soon rather than later. Pay particular attention if you regularly carry second-row passengers, since the 2026 recall covers retractor bolts for the second-row driver and passenger side seats, and EDV fleets should prioritize the driver's pretensioner inspection.
What the free repair involves
Most of these are inspect-and-tighten jobs: Rivian checks the front seat belt assemblies and secures the bolts, checks and secures the D-ring anchorage assemblies, and inspects and tightens the second-row retractor bolts. The 2022 passenger belt recall has dealers inspect and replace front passenger seat belt components as needed, and the EDV recall pairs an over-the-air update with inspection and replacement of the driver's pretensioner assembly. Common questions
Can I check the seat belt bolts myself?
No reliable way. The notices describe bolts at the B-pillar, the D-ring anchorages and the second-row retractors that may be improperly installed or tightened, and an improperly secured anchor typically only shows up in a crash. Let Rivian inspect it free.
My 2022 R1T was already repaired once — why another seat belt recall?
These are separate campaigns. The 2022 recall covered front anchors at the B-pillar, a later one covered D-ring bolts on 2022-2025 vehicles, and the newest covers second-row retractor bolts. Each needs its own inspection at no charge.
Is the front passenger airbag problem part of a seat belt recall?
Yes. On certain 2022 R1T and R1S vehicles, a faulty automatic locking retractor sensor in the front passenger seat belt system can report ON when it is OFF, causing suppression or improper deployment of that airbag.
