Jeep Wrangler frame stud can puncture fuel tank

The danger only shows up in a crash, but the result then is a fuel leak and possible fire; Jeep does not tell owners to stop driving or park outside, so drive normally and get the inspection done.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2020-2022 Jeep Wrangler vehicles, a metal stud on the frame sits close to the fuel tank. In a crash, that stud can punch a hole in the tank and let gasoline leak out. If leaking fuel reaches a hot surface or a spark, it can catch fire. Dealers will look at the frame and, if the stud is there, remove it and paint the area, all at no charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Wrangler is included in recall 28A.
2. Contact your Jeep dealer, or FCA US customer service at 1-800-853-1403, to schedule the frame inspection.
3. Have the stud removed if needed — the inspection and repair are free.
