Losing power while driving is dangerous because it can happen without warning; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but this one should not wait.

What's wrong, in plain English

These electric BMWs have a circuit that keeps watch on the cells inside the big high-voltage battery. Some of its electrical connections may not be fastened tightly. A loose connection can make the vehicle lose power and stall, which can happen while you are driving and leave you stopped in traffic. Dealers will replace the battery cell monitoring circuit at no charge. BMW mailed owner letters in June 2023.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included.
2. Call a BMW dealer, or BMW of North America at 1-800-525-7417, to schedule the work.
3. Have the high voltage battery cell monitoring circuit replaced — the repair is free.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2024 iX xDrive50 and 2023 i4 eDrive35, i4 eDrive40, and i4 M50 Hybrid Electric vehicles. The high voltage battery cell monitoring circuit may have improperly secured electrical connections which can result in an engine stall.
Safety risk
An engine stall increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the high voltage battery cell monitoring circuit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 22, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
