This is serious on two counts, losing drive power on the road and a fire risk, and BMW sent an early letter just to warn owners; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving or park outside.

What's wrong, in plain English

The big battery that powers these electric cars is built from smaller blocks called modules. Some modules may have been put together wrong at the factory, which puts stress on the module's frame and can make it fail. If one fails, the car's high-voltage system can shut down and you can lose power to the wheels while driving. A failed module can also catch fire. Dealers will replace the affected modules for free.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your car is covered. 2. Call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to ask whether the replacement parts are in and to book the work; BMW expected the remedy by the end of 2025 and was to mail a second letter. 3. Have the dealer replace the battery modules, free of charge.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2025 IX, 2023-2024 I7, and 2022-2023 i4 vehicles. The high-voltage battery cell modules may not have been assembled properly, resulting in stress on the module frame and possible module failure.
Safety risk
Battery module failure may lead to a shutdown of the high-voltage system which can result in a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, module failure increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will replace specific high-voltage battery cell modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk were mailed September 11, 2025. Another notice will be sent once the remedy becomes available, anticipated December 31, 2025Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
