A car that speeds up on its own without warning can cause a crash, and while BMW has not told owners to stop driving, you should get the free software update as soon as you can and be careful using cruise control at low speeds until then.

BMW is recalling certain 2022-2024 iX electric SUVs because of a problem with the cruise control. If you turn the steering wheel at low speed, the cruise control can switch itself back on even though you did not ask it to. When that happens, the car can speed up suddenly on its own. The fix is a free software update at the dealer, and owner letters were mailed August 2, 2023.
What you should do
2. Call your BMW dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and book the software update.
3. Have the update done - the repair is free.
