What's wrong, in plain English

The software that runs the electric drive motor can shut down the high-voltage system. If that happens, the vehicle loses drive power and will not pull, even though you are still steering and moving. BMW is fixing this with a software update. For many owners it arrives over the air, downloaded by the car itself, and a dealer can also install it. Either way there is no cost. Notification letters went out in August 2025.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included.
2. Accept the over-the-air software update when your vehicle offers it, and keep the car connected so it can download.
3. If you have not received the update, call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or a BMW dealer — the update is free either way.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2025 i4, 2022-2024 IX, 2023-2024 I7, and 2024 I5 vehicles. The electric drive motor software may shut down the high-voltage system, causing a loss of drive power.

Remedy
The electric drive motor software will be updated over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 5, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
