Kia Sorento backup camera can go blank from water

NHTSA campaign 23V639000 · Reported 2023-09-15 · Kia America, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Because of a manufacturing mistake, water can get into the backup camera on some 2019 Kia Sorentos. When that happens, the camera picture may not show up on the dashboard screen, so you cannot see what is behind you when backing up. That also means the vehicle does not meet the federal rear-visibility rule. A dealer will inspect the camera, add extra waterproofing to its wiring, or replace the camera if needed, all at no cost.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Sorento is included. 2. Call your Kia dealer, or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542, and reference recall SC282. 3. Have the free inspection and repair done, and until then check behind the vehicle before reversing.
