Nissan Ariya can suddenly lose drive power

NHTSA campaign 23V657000 · Reported 2023-09-28 · Nissan North America, Inc.

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious, because the power can cut out unexpectedly while you are driving; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but book the free software update as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

In some 2023 Ariya electric SUVs, the software that runs the inverter — the part that sends power from the battery to the motor — can wrongly decide there is an electrical short. When that happens, it shuts down the electric drive system and the vehicle loses power to the wheels. You could suddenly find yourself coasting with no acceleration, possibly in moving traffic. The repair is a software update rather than a parts replacement.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Ariya is covered by campaign 23V657000.
2. Contact a Nissan dealer, or Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 (recall R23C6), to schedule service.
3. The dealer will reprogram the inverter software, free of charge.
