Nissan electrical recalls: stalling, blank screens, and LEAF battery overheating
Nissan's electrical recalls fall into four clusters. Titan and Titan XD pickups from 2017-2020 carry the fire and stall cases: alternator harnesses damaged during engine installation, and engine harnesses with exposed wire that can short or arc. The 2023 Ariya was recalled three times for losing drive power — twice for inverter software that misreads a short circuit, once for damaged front traction motor O-rings. LEAF EVs with Level 3 quick-charge ports, 2019-2020 and then 2021-2022, can overheat their batteries during fast charging. Ignition keys are another repeat: worn switches on 2017-2018 Frontier, Versa and Versa Note, and jackknife keys that fold while driving on 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport. The 2025-2026 Kicks adds a blank instrument display and a missing shift-to-park warning.
Warning signs to watch for
- The engine or EV system shuts down unexpectedly while you are driving
- A jackknife key that collapses into the folded position, or an ignition switch that turns off on its own
- Sudden loss of drive power in the Ariya, which can follow an internal motor oil leak
- A LEAF battery that overheats during Level 3 quick charging
- A Kicks instrument screen that goes partly or fully blank, or no shift-to-park warning when you shut off out of Park
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group orders owners to stop driving or park outside, but several are urgent. The Titan harness recalls carry both a stall risk and a fire risk, so book the inspection rather than put it off. The Ariya can lose drive power without warning, and a worn ignition switch or a folding jackknife key can shut the vehicle off while you are moving. One clear restriction does apply: owners of 2021-2022 LEAFs are advised not to use Level 3 quick charging until the battery software update is complete.
What the free repair involves
Work varies by recall. Dealers inspect the Titan alternator and engine harnesses and reroute, clip or replace them; reprogram LEAF battery software, Ariya inverter software and the Kicks combination meter; reconfigure the Kicks body control module to restore the shift-to-park warning; replace the Ariya front traction motor assembly; replace worn ignition switches; and fit a spacer into the jackknife key slot. Everything is free.

Common questions
Can I still fast-charge my LEAF?
For 2021-2022 LEAFs, Nissan advises not using Level 3 quick charging until the remedy is complete. The earlier 2019-2020 recall covers the same overheating risk during Level 3 charging. Both fixes are free battery software updates done at a dealer.
Why was the 2023 Ariya recalled three times for lost power?
Different causes, same symptom: two inverter software recalls, in September 2023 and July 2024, where the software misdiagnoses a short circuit and shuts down the EV system, plus a June 2024 recall for front traction motor O-rings damaged during assembly, causing an internal oil leak.
What is done about the Rogue key that folds while driving?
Dealers insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key on 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles, free of charge. Until then, avoid bumping the key, since a collapsing key can shut the vehicle off.
