Toyota Prius rear doors can open while driving

NHTSA campaign 24V274000 · Reported 2024-04-17 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious but not a stop-driving recall: Toyota does not tell owners to park the car, though a door swinging open while moving or in a crash can badly injure someone, so get it fixed soon.

What's wrong, in plain English

Water can get into the switch that opens the rear doors on these Prius and Prius Prime cars. If the water causes a short circuit, a rear door that is not locked can pop open by itself. That can happen while you are driving down the road or during a crash. The dealer will replace both the right and left rear door opener switches at no cost. Toyota mailed letters to owners on August 9, 2024.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your car is included. 2. Call any Toyota dealer, or Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, and ask for recall 24TB06/24TA06. 3. Have both rear door switches replaced — the repair is free.
