Chevy Corvette front seat belts can lock up

NHTSA campaign 24V418000 · Reported 2024-06-06 · General Motors, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious but not an emergency: the car drives normally, though anyone in a seat with a stuck belt is unprotected in a crash, so do not let someone ride unbelted.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain Chevrolet Corvettes, the seat belt retractor — the spool the belt winds into — can lock while the belt is put away. When that happens, you cannot pull the belt out at all, so the driver's seat belt, the passenger's, or both may be impossible to use. The belt is not worn out or dirty; the mechanism itself jams in the stowed position. Dealers will replace the affected retractors at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Corvette is included. 2. Call your Chevrolet dealer, or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (recall number N242441390), and book the retractor replacement. 3. Have the repair done free of charge, and until then avoid seating anyone whose belt will not pull out.
