Chevrolet seat belt recalls: loose bolts, stuck belts, third-row failures
Chevrolet's seat belt recalls cluster around fasteners and retractors. Bolts that were loose, missing, untightened or simply the wrong part run through the 2020 Bolt EV and much of the 2021 Blazer, Camaro, Colorado and Equinox lineup, the 2023-2024 Colorado, the 2024 Silverado EV, and rear retractors on 2016-2021 Malibu. Retractors that fail to lock affect the 2020 Corvette, 2017-2018 Silverado 2500 and 3500, and rear belts in 2018-2019 Volt and Escalade ESV. Full-size SUVs repeat too: 2021-2022 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade had third-row belts misrouted behind the seat-folding mechanism and buckle rivets formed badly. Others are belts you cannot use — a 2021 Tahoe center latch trapped under trim, 2024-2025 Corvette retractors locked stowed — plus a pretensioner that can scorch Silverado carpet.
Warning signs to watch for
- A belt retractor that stays locked in its stowed position so you cannot reach the belt
- A latch plate trapped under the trim bezel, making the center seat belt impossible to buckle
- A rear belt that does not lock when pulled all the way out — noticeable when installing a child seat
- A seat belt bracket, buckle or retractor that feels loose or moves at its anchor point
- Loose, incorrect or untightened bolts usually show no sign at all and only matter in a crash
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these recalls carries a stop-driving order or a park-outside instruction, so the vehicle itself can be used while you wait. The limits are seat by seat. GM says not to let anyone sit in the 2024 Silverado EV second-row center seat until the bezel is replaced, and the 2021 Tahoe second-row center belt cannot be buckled at all. Keep the third row empty on 2021-2022 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade until the belts are checked, and never let someone ride unbelted in a Corvette seat whose retractor is stuck.
What the free repair involves
Most of these repairs are small. Dealers inspect and tighten front and rear seat belt bolts, or replace incorrect ones. Retractors, buckle assemblies and trim bezels are replaced where they can fail, lock up or tear a belt; third-row belts are inspected, rerouted or replaced; the Tahoe latch plate is repositioned; and the Silverado pretensioner bracket opening is closed off. All free of charge.

Which seats should I keep empty until the repair is done?
The 2024 Silverado EV second-row center seat, which GM says should not be used until remedied, and the 2021 Tahoe second-row center seat, whose belt cannot be buckled. Also keep the third row empty in 2021-2022 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade.
My belts look and feel fine — do I still need the recall done?
Yes. Bolts that are the wrong part, loose, missing or never tightened give no everyday sign, and a retractor built with the wrong torsion bar looks normal. These problems only reveal themselves in a crash, when the belt may not restrain you.
Why does a seat belt recall mention fire?
On 2019-2020 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 and 2020 heavy-duty trucks with carpet flooring, hot gas can vent through an opening in the front pretensioner bracket when it deploys and ignite the carpet. Dealers close off that opening free of charge.
