Ford Mustang Steering Wheel May Turn On Its Own

NHTSA campaign 24V493000 · Reported 2024-06-28 · Ford Motor Company

critical How serious is it? About this label

Serious — the steering can move without you doing anything and cause a crash; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but do not put this repair off.

What's wrong, in plain English

Your Mustang has a backup sensor that tells the power steering system how hard you are turning the wheel. On these cars it may have been set up wrong, and when that happens the steering wheel can move side to side by itself even though you are holding it steady. That makes the car hard to control. The repair is a software update to the power steering computer, done at the dealer.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Mustang is covered. 2. Contact a Ford dealer and book the power steering software update, Ford recall number 24S44. 3. The update is free; call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 if the dealer cannot help.
