Why do Chevrolet rearview cameras and pedestrian alerts have recalls?

3 NHTSA recalls · Chevrolet · Back Over Prevention · model years 2023–2025 (we track 2018 and newer) · newest 2026-08-20

Two of these three recalls are the same rearview camera complaint. The April 2026 recall covers 2023-2025 Malibu vehicles whose rearview camera screen may display a distorted or blank image. The August 2026 recall describes a distorted or blank rearview camera image on 2024-2026 Chevrolet Trailblazer and 2025 Chevrolet Trax vehicles, listed with Buick Encore GX and Envista models. In both, the notices say a rearview image that does not display correctly reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle. The third recall is different: 2025-2026 Equinox EV vehicles whose pedestrian alert sound system may not produce a sufficient change in volume between stopped and moving at low speeds, failing FMVSS 141.

Warning signs to watch for

Can you keep driving? What the notices say

None of these three notices carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction. The Malibu notice and the Trailblazer and Trax notice say a rearview image that does not display correctly reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle and increases the risk of a crash, and the Equinox EV notice says a vehicle that does not emit sufficient sound may fail to alert pedestrians that it is moving. Beyond describing those risks and the dealer remedy, the notices do not tell owners to stop driving.

What the free repair involves

For the 2025-2026 Equinox EV, the body control module software is updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air software update, free of charge. For the 2023-2025 Malibu, dealers inspect and, if necessary, replace the rearview camera, free of charge. The 2024-2026 Trailblazer and 2025 Trax recall also has dealers inspect and replace the camera if necessary, free of charge.

Common questions

Can the Equinox EV pedestrian alert fix be done without a dealer visit?

The notice states the body control module software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air software update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 29, 2026, so owners should confirm with Chevrolet which route applies to their vehicle.

My camera image looks normal — is my Malibu still included?

Inclusion is determined by VIN, not by what the screen currently shows. The notice covers certain 2023-2025 Malibu vehicles and says the rearview camera screen may display a distorted or blank image; dealers inspect and replace the camera if necessary.

When do owner letters go out for the Trailblazer and Trax recall?

The notice says owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning September 16, 2026. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. The recall covers 2024-2026 Trailblazer and 2025 Trax vehicles, listed with Buick Encore GX and Envista models.
