The passenger seat belt has a locking mode that clamps the belt tight so it cannot loosen. On these cars that lock can switch off too early, before the belt has pulled all the way in. The belt then may not hold as it should in a crash, raising the chance of injury. The dealer will inspect the belts and retractors and replace them if needed, at no cost.
The brake unit in these BMWs has a part inside — a rotor joined to a shaft — that may not have been welded correctly at the factory. If you brake hard, the two pieces can come apart. When that happens, the anti-lock brakes stop working and the power assist that makes the brake pedal easy to press is reduced, so stopping the car takes much more effort and distance. BMW dealers will replace the whole brake unit.
Some 2020-2021 BMW M2 Coupes and 2020 M4 Coupes were built with fuel injectors missing a small part whose job is to soak up vibration. Without it, the spot where the fuel line meets the fuel rail shakes more than it should, and over time that connection can be damaged. A damaged joint can let gasoline leak out, and if it reaches anything hot or sparking, it can start a fire. Dealers will check the injectors and replace parts if needed.
These BMWs have knee airbags — cushions low in the dash that protect the driver's and front passenger's legs in a crash. On the recalled cars, those airbags may have been folded and put together incorrectly at the factory. If that happened, the airbag may not open the way it should during a crash, so it may not protect you properly and you could be injured. A dealer will replace both knee airbag units free of charge.
Certain 2018 BMW 430i, 440i and M4 convertibles may have front seat belts built with the wrong locking parts inside the retractor, the mechanism that is supposed to grab and hold the belt when the car stops hard. Because the parts do not match, the belt may not lock and may fail to hold the person in the seat during a crash, raising the risk of injury. A dealer will check both front belts and replace them if needed.
