Volvo truck wheel recalls: loose lug nuts and detaching wheels
⚠ 1 of these recalls carries a do-not-drive advisory.
All three of these Volvo recalls are heavy-truck wheel-end problems, and they are far from equally serious. The most severe covers 2026 VAH, 2026-2027 VN, VHD and VNL (4), and 2027 VNR (4) trucks whose wheel lug nuts can loosen and let a wheel detach — the one recall in these Volvo groups where owners are told not to drive at all. A 2021 recall covers 2022 VNL trucks fitted with Alcoa Mirror Polish wheels, part number ULT 391, size 22.5 x 8.25, which may not support the load and can bend or break; those trucks were contained by the manufacturer, so no owners were notified. The mildest is a hubcap compression spring on 2021-2022 VAH, VDH, VNL and VNR that lets the hubcap separate.
Warning signs to watch for
- Lug nuts that will not hold torque, or visible movement at the wheel and hub
- Vibration, wobble or unusual noise from a wheel while driving
- Masking material left on the wheel or hub mating surface during assembly
- A hubcap that rattles loose or goes missing on 2021-2022 trucks
- Bending or cracking of an Alcoa Mirror Polish ULT 391 wheel under load
Is it safe to keep driving?
These three differ sharply. For the lug nut recall on 2026-2027 VAH, VN, VHD, VNL (4) and VNR (4) trucks, owners are advised not to drive the vehicle until the repair has been performed, because a wheel can come off. The hubcap recall is the opposite: the danger is mainly to traffic around you, no parking instruction is given, and you can keep driving while you arrange the free repair. The Alcoa wheel trucks were held by the manufacturer, so effectively nobody should be driving one.
What the free repair involves
All three repairs are free. For the lug nut recall, dealers inspect the wheel and hub mating surfaces, remove any masking material left behind, and replace worn components if necessary. The 2022 VNL trucks with Alcoa Mirror Polish ULT 391 wheels have those wheels replaced. For the hubcap recall, the dealer removes the affected hubcap. None of these is an over-the-air fix.

Common questions
I never got a letter about the Alcoa wheel recall — why not?
Volvo says those 2022 VNL trucks were contained by the manufacturer, so no owners were notified. Dealers replace the wheels free of charge. If you think your truck has ULT 391 22.5 x 8.25 wheels, contact Volvo Trucks.
Does 'do not drive' mean I cannot drive it to the dealer?
The notice advises owners not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed, because the lug nuts can loosen and a wheel can detach. Contact Volvo Trucks to arrange the inspection rather than driving the truck in.
If the dealer removes my hubcap, do I get a new one?
The notice says only that dealers will remove the hubcap free of charge; it does not mention fitting a replacement. Owner letters were mailed July 12, 2021, and Volvo Trucks customer service can be reached at 1-800-528-6586.
