When you shift into reverse in these SUVs, the picture from the backup camera may take longer than two seconds to show up on the screen. Federal rules require the full view to appear within two seconds. That delay means you could start backing up before you can actually see what is behind the vehicle. The problem is in the rearview mirror unit that holds the display, so dealers will replace the entire mirror at no cost.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Journey is covered by recall 18V396000.
2. Schedule the repair with your Dodge dealer, or call Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 (recall U58), to have the rearview mirror replaced free of charge.
3. Until it is fixed, turn around and look behind you every time you back up instead of relying on the screen.

Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2018 Dodge Journey vehicles. When reverse gear has been selected, the rear camera view may not be fully visible within two seconds. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
Safety risk: If the full camera view is delayed and the driver does not check their surroundings before backing up, there may be an increased risk of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rearview mirror, free of charge. The recall began August 2, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U58.
