Moderate risk — the car drives normally and the notice does not tell you to stop driving, but you could be misled about airbags or unfastened belts, so check by eye that everyone is buckled until it is fixed.

What's wrong, in plain English

Because of a software error, the light that tells you the front passenger airbag has been switched off can go out even though the airbag is still off. The seat belt reminder lights for the front passenger seat and the back seats can also go out even when those belts are unbuckled. So you may think everyone is buckled, or that the airbag is on, when it isn't. Dealers replace the indicator unit free.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your 2019 Mazda3 is covered by recall 19V363000 (Mazda's number is 3319E).
2. Call your Mazda dealer or Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 4, to schedule the repair.
3. Have the airbag and seat belt indicator assembly replaced — there is no cost to you.

Summary
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2019 Mazda3 vehicles. Due to incorrect programing, the passenger air bag deactivation indicator light may erroneously turn off although the passenger air bag is deactivated. In addition, the seat belt status indicators for both the front passenger seat and/or rear seats may erroneously turn off although the front passenger and/or rear seat belts are unfastened.
Safety risk
Incorrect indicator warning lights may lead the driver and/or passengers to be unaware of deactivated air bags or unfastened seat belts, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy
Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag/seat belt status indicator assembly, free of charge. The recall began July 9, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 3319E.
