Losing steering assist without warning can lead to a crash, and while the notice does not tell you to park the van, you should get this fixed right away and be careful in the meantime.

What's wrong, in plain English

A sensor inside the electric power steering unit may have been built incorrectly. If it acts up, the power steering assist can switch off while you are driving. Without that assist, the steering wheel takes much more effort to turn, which is hard to handle if it happens suddenly or during a turn. There is no warning before it happens. Your dealer will replace the steering unit at no charge to you.

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Metris is covered by recall 19V489000.
2. Contact a Mercedes-Benz Metris dealer, or call Daimler Vans USA at 1-877-762-8267, and reference recall VS2LENKEPS.

Summary: Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris vehicles. An internal sensor within the electric power steering unit may have been improperly manufactured, possibly resulting in the deactivation of the electric power steering assist.
Safety risk: An unexpected loss of power steering assist can increase the risk of crash.
Remedy: DVUSA will notify owners, and Metris dealers will replace the steering unit, free of charge. The recall began July 2, 2019. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this recall is VS2LENKEPS.
