Mercedes Sprinter airbags may never have been switched on

NHTSA campaign 19V695000 · Reported 2019-10-02 · Daimler Vans USA, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious — you could be riding with airbags that will not work, though the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The airbag system in these vans may not have been activated after the van was built. If it was left switched off, the airbags simply will not go off in a crash, and the van does not meet the federal rule for crash protection. Nothing about the way the van drives or looks will tell you whether yours is affected. A dealer will check whether the airbag system is active and turn it on if it is not, at no cost.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your van is on the list. 2. Call Daimler Vans USA at 1-877-762-8267 or your dealer and ask about recall VS3AIRIGEL. 3. Have the free inspection done — the repair has been available since February 2020.
