Mercedes Sprinter exhaust pipe leak creates fire risk

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2019 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter vans, the screws holding a pipe that routes exhaust back into the engine may not have been tightened enough at the factory. If those screws are loose, very hot exhaust gas can escape under the hood, where it can heat up or ignite nearby parts and start a fire. Dealers will redo the screw connection and fit new seals so the joint is sealed tight again.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your van is affected.
2. Call Daimler Vans USA at 1-877-762-8267 (recall VS3AGROHR) or your Sprinter dealer for an appointment.
3. Have the screws retightened and the seals replaced; it is free of charge.

Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019 Mercedes Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles. The connecting screws on the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) pipe may not have been correctly tightened.
Safety risk
If the connecting screws are not properly tightened, hot exhaust gases may leak from the EGR pipe, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Sprinter dealers will renew the screw connection and the flange seals on the exhaust gas recirculation pipe, free of charge. DVUSA issued owners an interim notification on April 6, 2020. The recall began May 4, 2020. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this recall is VS3AGROHR.
