Mercedes-Benz Sprinter winter tires may be mounted backwards

NHTSA campaign 20V157000 · Reported 2020-03-18 · Daimler Vans USA, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

This is a moderate concern that mainly shows up in wet or snowy weather, and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, so you can keep driving while taking extra care in bad conditions.

What's wrong, in plain English

Some 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vans were fitted with winter tires that may have been put on facing the wrong way. Winter tires have a tread pattern made to turn in one direction only. Mounted backwards, they cannot clear away water and snow the way they should, so the van can have less grip on wet or snowy roads. A dealer will check which way each tire faces and turn or replace them.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your van is included.
2. Call a Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Sprinter dealer, or Daimler Vans USA at 1-877-762-8267 (recall VS3LAUFRI), to book an inspection.
3. Have the tires turned around or replaced — the inspection and any tire replacement are free.
